LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Veteran,
My name is Julie Barnes. I am the Director of Veterans’ Services for the newly created Westfield/Montgomery District. I served 11 years in the Air National Guard and spent my first four years as a Supply Technician at Barnes Air National Guard base. After graduating from Westfield State, I went to Officer Training and accepted a position with the Maryland Air National Guard as a C-130 Navigator. It is my honor and privilege to serve and support you!

The Westfield/Montgomery Veterans’ Services Office is responsible for administering Federal and State benefits to qualified veterans who live in Westfield and Montgomery. The problem is many veterans don’t know about these benefits. The state of Massachusetts has a program for low income, unemployed and underemployed veterans. We may be able to provide monetary assistance to those who are single and have less than $8,400 in assets and less than $2,430 monthly income, or married couple with less than $16,800 in assets and take in less than $3,287 monthly. Our office can also assist you with processing Federal VA Claims at no charge! We can submit your claims directly to the VA. We help with Pension claims, Disability claims, Aid and Assistance for Nursing Home/Homebound Care, Burial Benefits, Cemetery Flags, and more.

If you have any questions, please call or come down and visit us in the office. We are located in the Westfield Senior Center building at 45 Noble Street, Westfield, and you can reach us by phone at 413-572-6247.

Thank you for your military service,
Julie Barnes

These benefits are provided to qualifying veterans and/or their surviving spouses and dependents. For more detailed information about determining if you might qualify for these benefits, based on your financial situation, see the Income and Assets link.
  • Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) Chapter 115 – Income and Assets: The Income and Assets document provides more detailed information on the income and assets guidelines for individuals who may be interested in applying for Veterans Benefits under MGL Chapter 115. It explains what may be counted as an asset, what the current income thresholds are for claimants in certain circumstances, as well as some of the rules about accurately declaring income/assets and the consequences of failing to do so. You should view the Overview Document link prior to viewing this link.
